 Biography and Highlights:
  • Born: Nov. 12, 1947, in Ohiba, Japan. Eldest son of the late Zenya Yoshida, founder of a global bloodstock dynasty headquartered at Shadai Farm on the island of Hokkaido. Terry Yoshida's father, Zenya Yoshida, who died in August of 1993, founded Shadai Farm in 1955. Terry Yoshida's grandfather, Zenuske Yoshida, was one of the first Japanese to import Thoroughbreds from the U.S. on a major scale. He died in 1946, leaving the family business to Zenya Yoshida and his two brothers, Zenichi and Zenjirou. By the mid-1950s, Zenya had taken total control
  • Zenya Yoshida formerly owned a stud farm in the Tokyo region, which was bought by the Japanese government in 1958 as part of the land for Narita International Airport. Yoshida used the money to buy land on Hokkaido, the northern island that is now Japan's principal center of Thoroughbred breeding, and develop Shadai Farm there
  • Terry Yoshida is president and general manager of Shadai, by far Japan's biggest and most successful Thoroughbred breeding operation. He is also the vice chairman of the Japan Horse Racing Association
  • When Teruya Yoshida graduated in economics from Keoi University in 1969, his father sent him to Kentucky to manage Fontaineblue Farm, the American branch of Shadai. He spent five years at Fontaineblue, during which time he spent $100,000 for Northern Taste, a son of Northern Dancer who won the 1974 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp and became champion stallion in Japan for 11 consecutive years
  • 2000 stakes winners: This year, Terry Yoshida has campaigned two group winners in Japan. They are Manic Sunday, winner of the Sankei Sports Sho Yonsai Himba Tokubetsu, and Stinger, winner of the Kyoto Himba Tokubetsu and the Keio Hai Spring Cup
  • In 1999, Shadai Farm stood 16 stallions, including Sunday Silence, the 1989 Breeders' Cup Classic winner and Horse of Year, who has been leading sire in Japan each season since 1995, and Timber Country, 1994 champion 2-year-old and Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner. Other stallions standing at Shadai include champion Waajib, who raced for Shadai in the U.S. and Europe; group I winner, Northern Taste, who has been among the leading sires in Japan for the past three years; Soccer Boy, 1987 champion 2-year-old colt and 1988 champion sprinter in Japan; and White Muzzle, who raced for Yoshida
  • Prior to the Kentucky Derby, Terry Yoshida privately bought an interest in Fusaichi Pegasus from his owner, Fusao Sekiguchi. Fusaichi Pegasus has grade I wins in the San Felipe Stakes, Wood Memorial, and Jerome Handicap. Fusaichi Pegasus finished second behind Red Bullet in the Preakness Stakes. At the close of Fusaichi Pegasus' racing career, he will stand stud at the Irish-based Coolmore Stud's Kentucky operation, Ashford Stud. Yoshida also purchased part of Agnes World, multiple group I winner, including a win in the Darley July Cup
  • This year at North American yearling sales, Shadai Farm also bought seven yearlings, including a $500,000 Gone West—My Song For You (by Seattle Song) filly
  • Past Breeders' Cup horses: in 1988, El Senor finished sixth in the Turf; in 1989, El Senor finished seventh in the Turf; in 1990, Hot Date finished eighth in the Juvenile; in 1990 El Senor finished third in the Turf; in 1991, El Senor finished ninth in the Turf; in 1993, Ski Paradise finished second in the Mile; in 1994, Erin Bird finished fourth in the Distaff and Ski Paradise finished 10th in the Mile. Yoshida returned again the following year to have Shaanxi finish 11th in the Mile.
