ARCADIA, Calif. – January has been Tapizar’s month at Santa Anita the last two years, with eye-catching wins in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes in 2011 and the Grade 2 San Fernando Stakes last month.
February was not good to Tapizar last year. He finished fifth in the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes and emerged from the race with an injury that kept him sidelined until October.
This February, expectations are high. Owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, Tapizar will start as a heavy favorite in the $200,000 Strub Stakes over 1 1/8 miles for 4-year-olds at Santa Anita on Saturday. ...

Race Comments: ULTIMATE EAGLE had speed off the inside and dueled for the lead, angled in entering the backstretch, inched away nearing the half mile pole and drew off in the stretch under some hand urging, a crack of the whip a sixteenth out and a long hold late. JAYCITO chased inside, went around a rival on the backstretch, angled back in for the second turn, cut the corner into the stretch and was clearly second best. PRAYER FOR RELIEF stalked the pace inside, fell back some on the backstretch, continued along the rail on the second turn and picked up the show. TAPIZAR pulled his way along three deep then dueled outside the winner, put a head in front briefly early on the backstretch, battled between foes five eighths out, stalked off the rail then between rivals leaving the backstretch, continued alongside a foe on the second turn and weakened. BALLADRY angled in and settled inside, went around a rival on the backstretch, continued a bit off the rail on the second turn and lacked the needed rally. CLUBHOUSE RIDE chased off the rail, went up four wide on the backstretch then stalked off the inside, angled in some on the second turn and weakened. BEER MEISTER settled off the pace inside and saved ground to no avail. INDIAN WINTER between horses early, stalked off the rail, bid three deep between foes five eighths out, tracked the leader again leaving the backstretch, dropped back on the second turn and weakened.
